Game Rules

Each game gives you 6 attempts to guess a hidden 5-letter word. After each guess, every letter is color-coded to show how close you are:

A
Yellow — correct letter in the correct position
B
Orange — correct letter but in the wrong position
C
Gray — letter is not in the word

Players take turns submitting guesses. Use the on-screen keyboard or your physical keyboard to type your guess, then press Enter to submit.

Game Modes

Cooperative Mode

Work together to find one hidden word. You and your friend share the same board and take turns guessing. You win or lose as a team.

Competitive Mode

Each player picks a secret word for their opponent. Take turns guessing on separate boards. The first player to solve their word wins.

Tips & Strategies

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it free?

Yes! The core game is completely free. You can create games, invite friends, and play in both modes without paying anything. Optional themed wordpacks are available for purchase.

Do I need an account?

No account is needed. You can start playing immediately as a guest. Optionally, sign in with Google to save your progress and access purchased wordpacks.

How many players can play?

Each game is designed for exactly 2 players. One player creates a game and shares the link or game code with a friend.

Can I play on mobile?

Yes! The game works in any modern web browser on phones, tablets, and computers. No app download required — just open the link and play.

How is WordDuel different from Wordle?

Wordle is a solo daily puzzle. WordDuel is a real-time multiplayer game where two players connect simultaneously, take turns, and either collaborate on a shared word or compete on words they chose for each other.

Can I use WordDuel in a classroom?

Yes! WordDuel is a great vocabulary and critical-thinking activity. Teachers can pair students, project a live game, or use it as a warm-up. No student accounts required. See our For Teachers page for ideas.

Does WordDuel have different word packs?

Yes! Beyond the free Classic word list, WordDuel offers themed word packs — Sports, Science, Food, and Animals — as one-time purchases. The game creator selects a pack before starting.

What happens if my opponent disconnects?

The game pauses. After an inactivity period, the session is marked inactive. You can return to the home screen and start a fresh game at any time.

Is there a time limit per guess?

No per-guess timer. However, if a player is inactive for 10 minutes, they'll receive a warning before being disconnected — preventing games from stalling indefinitely.

How do I share a game with a friend?

After creating a game, copy the shareable link or short code from the lobby. Your friend can click the link or paste the code on the home page to join instantly.
