Each game gives you 6 attempts to guess a hidden 5-letter word. After each guess, every letter gets a pen mark that shows how close you are:
Players take turns submitting guesses. Use the on-screen keys or your physical keyboard to write your guess, then press Enter (the "pass" key) to submit. The marks also appear on the keyboard, so you can see at a glance which letters are still in play.
WordDuel's free Classic pack has 524 target words and accepts 2,097 valid five-letter guesses; each player gets 6 guesses and every game has exactly 2 players.
Work together to find one hidden word. You and your friend share the same board and take turns guessing. You win or lose as a team. Use the in-game chat to talk strategy between turns.
Each player picks a secret word for their opponent from a short list. Take turns guessing on separate boards; a random player goes first and turns alternate after every guess. The first player to solve their word wins.

Yes! Beyond the free Classic word list, WordDuel offers themed word packs — Sports, Science, Food, and Animals — as one-time purchases. The game creator selects a pack before starting.
The game pauses. After an inactivity period, the session is marked inactive. You can return to the home screen and start a fresh game at any time.
No per-guess timer. However, if a player is inactive for 10 minutes, they'll receive a warning before being disconnected — preventing games from stalling indefinitely.
After creating a game, copy the shareable link or short code from the lobby. Your friend can click the link or paste the code on the home page to join instantly.
